Blue/Bronze Greek Capital
A special blend of handmade paper pulp is cast into a Greek capital.
The drying process involves several days and a gradual unmolding in
order to preserve the detail, yet give the surface a textural affect of
old world metal. After thoroughly drying, it is then sealed with an
acrylic medium and base coated for durability. The multiple layers of
metallic, acrylic, and powdered pigments are added until the final
effect is very old world bronze.
A Mediterranean blue handmade paper was chosen as the
background and it sits above the surface in a black wooden shadowbox
frame measuring 16” by 16”. |

Copper/Patina Chinese Coin
Handmade pulp was specially blended and cast into the form of a Chinese
good luck coin. After drying for several days, it is sealed for added
strength and durability. Several layers of metallic, acrylic, and
powdered paints are now added to create an appropriate base. Then
patina treatments are applied using chemicals containing actual metal
and chemical compounds that authentically react and produce the desired
effect. The center embellishment is made of three small bamboo sticks
sandwiched between a larger stone and a smaller jade donut.
A copper metallic mat board surrounds the art within the black wooden shadowbox frame measuring 16” by 16”. |

Pan’s Pipes II
The legendary Greek god of the forests and meadows had fallen in love
with a nymph named Syrinx. When Pan (half goat and half man) pursued
her she became frightened and prayed to her sisters for help. They
changed her into some reeds. When Pan sighed in disappointment, he
realized that the reeds gave forth a musical sound. If he cut the reeds
in unequal lengths and bound them together, it became a lovely musical
instrument.
I used handmade paper that was made out of shredded
leaves, wood, and grasses. It was then rolled and cut to form the
various sized pipes. They were then stabilized and embellished with a
binding made out of elements that could be found on the forest’s floor,
as well as a hand formed clay medallion and fibers made from goat
(mohair) to also tie into the story behind the myth. |

Iron Gate I
A special blend of paper fibers was processed to create a pulp that was
compressed into a mold. It takes several days for the form to dry. The
process of unmolding has to be done slowly over a period of twelve
hours so as to retain as much detail as possible. Once unmolded, there
is additional drying time and then it is sealed with several acrylic
coats of paint to add strength and durability. I now proceed with the
layering on of several coats of paints and patina treatments using
actual metallic oxides and chemicals until successfully developed.
The shadowbox frame measures 12” by 15”. |

Gold Coin
Handmade pulp was specially blended and cast into the form of a Chinese
good luck coin. After drying for several days, it is sealed to ensure
durability. Several layers of metallic, acrylic, powdered paints, and
inks were added to create the look of a deeply pitted ancient gold coin
that has lain at the bottom of the sea for centuries. The patina
treatments then accent the look of antiquity. The center embellishment
is a jade donut, a large Asian coin, and a gold dragonfly. The
composition is elevated from the background and set against a backdrop
of a handmade (gold printed) Asian paper.
The gold metal shadowbox frame is 16” by 16” and has a white mat. |

Love, Tranquility, and Happiness
Three clay pieces have been molded in the form of three Asian
characters meaning Love, Tranquility, and Happiness. They are sealed,
painted, and antiqued with metallic gold. They are then placed on a
scroll of red Asian printed paper and gold momi paper. A bamboo stick
anchors the scroll and three Asian coins are placed between the clay
pieces with a tassel anchoring the third. The scroll is layered on
semi-transparent oil paper and a black and white Asian printed paper.
Two black enameled chop sticks with red lettering and gold wire flank
either side of the scroll.
The black wooden shadowbox frame measures 10” by 21”. |

African Woman
Handmade pulp was specially blended and cast into a plaster mold that I
had made of a woman’s head. After drying for several days, it is sealed
and painted. Black /white fabric makes up her headdress and this is
embellished with feathers and a handmade bead. This is placed on a
sheet of handmade paper that was pulped especially for this project.
This is then layered on black lava paper and surrounded by a mat of the
same fabric.
The black wooden shadowbox frame measures 16” by 20”. |

Celtic Banner
Handmade pulp was specially blended and cast into a form. After drying
for several days, it is sealed for added durability. Layers of paint
are applied to create the appropriate base and silver is used to accent
the dimensional details. I then designed the smaller object in the
composition by using clay that I impressed and baked. After panting and
applying the silver accents, I layered the work on silver mirror and
sterling papers.
The shadow box frame measures 16” by 20” and has a metallic silver mat. |

Blue Column
This column was developed by combining three different forms of hand
pressed paper pulp. After assembling, it was sealed and painted to look
like an ancient stone column. The appearance of debris and moss on the
surface was developed by using various patinas. The metal ivy bough was
also painted and treated with green patina. It is placed on a
background of gold momi paper that has the Greek key design cut out at
the top and bottom borders. This is then placed on a Mediterranean
blue/green handmade paper.
The black wooden frame measures approximately 10” by 20”. |
|
White Stone Column
A special blend of cotton linter and paper fibers was processed to
create a pulp that was compressed onto a mold form. It takes several
days to dry. The process of unmolding has to be done slowly so as to
retain as much detail as possible. It requires additional drying time
and then it is sealed with several coats of paint to add durability and
strength. I now layer several coats of paints, pumice, and actual mica
flakes in order to give it the true look and texture of ancient stone.
The art is placed on a blue/green handmade paper and framed in a black wooden shadowbox frame measuring 14 inches square. |

Written Artifact
A special blend of pulp was processed and compressed into a mold. After
several days of drying time, the form is slowly removed over a period
of time to ensure that the dimensional details of the piece have been
retained. It then needs to be layered with several coats of acrylic
paints, metallic powders, and patina treatments until the final result
is successfully achieved. The piece is then elevated onto layers of
black mirror and gold momi papers. It is then placed on a decorative
paper containing ancient writings and a piece of hand painted paper.
The shadowbox frame measures 12” by 15”. |

Rusted Ironwork I
Rusted Ironwork II
A specific combination of paper fibers was processed to create a pulp
that I compressed into two molds. After several days of drying time,
the process of unmolding begins. It takes a slow process over twelve
hours so as to retain as much detail as possible. After more thorough
drying, they are sealed with several coats of acrylic paint to add
strength and durability. I now proceed with the layering on of several
coats of paints and patina treatments using actual iron particles until
successfully developed.
Each completed art piece is placed on a background of
amber velveteen within a wooden shadowbox frame measuring 9” by 11”.
They are available for sale individually or as a pair. |

Chinese Lion
A special blend of cotton linter and paper fibers was formed into a
pulp that was compressed into a mold resembling an archway. It was then
sealed, painted, and given a patina treatment that gives it the faux
effect of metal. The lion’s head, staff, and four bolts were formed in
clay and finished with metallic paints and copper leaf. A Chinese coin
threaded with fibers adorns the staff. This composition is placed on
layers of copper metallic, black mirror, and copper/black decorative
paper.
It is placed within a black shadowbox frame measuring 13” by 17”. |
|
Compartments
A special pulp was blended and cast into a mold. The paper was then
manipulated to form compartments prior to drying. After thoroughly dry,
it was sealed and painted with many layers of metallic paints, powders,
and patina finishes. The bottom staff was formed in clay and impressed
with old world designs. The round stone donut is authentic turquoise.
The art pieces are placed on alternating layers of black and copper
mirror paper. The black mat is embellished with copper paint.
The black shadowbox frame measures 12” by 16”. |

Nautilus I
This composition was made with very unique handmade paper that I made
using sanded pulp and multiple layers of paint peelings. The papers are
layered to give the effect of the sea washing ashore and gently
touching the shells on the sandy beach. The nautilus shell is an actual
shell that has been thinly sliced to show the beautiful spiral of
chambers. The mat is sand colored to coordinate with the composition.
The gold metal shadowbox frame measures 11” by 14”. |

Bronze Cathedral Plaque
A specific combination of paper fibers was combined and processed to
create a pulp that could be molded into this form. After thoroughly
drying, it was sealed and painted with bronze and iron oxides. It was
also textured with black particles of mica to give it a deteriorating
appearance on the surface areas. Three bronze glass beads are added to
give a contrast in texture and enhance the design.
The composition is then alternately layered on metallic and black handmade papers.
It is framed in a wooden shadowbox frame measuring 12” by 15”. |

Happiness (Red)
The focal point of this composition is a clay piece molded in the form
of the Asian character meaning Happiness. It is sealed, painted, and
antiqued with metallic silver. It is then layered on silver Mizuhiki
cord, a silver-embossed skeleton leaf, embellished black tassels, and
placed on slightly textured red silk. The composition is additionally
layered on silver mirror, black mirror, and sterling colored handmade
papers.
The metallic silver frame measures 16” by 20” and has a black mat. |

Inspirations I
Each of the nine squares that appear in this composition is a miniature
collage. Each square is embellished to give it dimension and a theme.
The techniques of thermography, stamping, torn paper collage, and
assemblage are used in each of the nine compositions. Each of the
squares is framed by layering each one on gold and black mirror paper.
They are then assembled in a pleasing arrangement and adhered to a gold
metallic mat board.
The gold metallic frame measures 11” by 14” and has a black mat (gloss). |

Tranquility / Japanese Red Maple Leaves
The focal point of this composition is a free formed piece of clay with
the Asian character for Tranquility elevated on the surface. It is
sealed and then painted with black and gold metallic paints. I
integrated preserved red Japanese maple leaves, black/gold checked
metallic papers, black mirror paper, and gold gloss papers to form the
composition. The black tassel is embellished with a coordinating red
glass bead.
The gold shadowbox frame measures 11” by 14”. |

Scarab Sun Walk
The Egyptians often symbolized the sun god’s daily walk across the
heavens with the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the
ground. The hieroglyphic meaning of the scarab was “to come into being”
and its generative power (like the sun) was highly worshipped. Scarabs
were also used to mark particular events under the reigning king.
As an artist I try to visually interpret interesting
and symbolic meanings through my art. The handmade paper woven
background symbolizes the interconnection of all life. The golden
fibers represent the sun’s rays creating life and a visual pathway for
the scarab beetle along the ground. By placing the composition in a
scroll format, I wish to relate the scarab’s sun walk across the
heavens to the chronicling of the Pharaoh’s life and deeds.
This composition is matted in a gold metallic shadowbox frame measuring 16” by 20”. |

Pan’s Pipes I
The legendary Greek god of the forests and meadows had fallen in love
with a nymph named Syrinx. When Pan (half goat and half man) pursued
her, she became frightened and prayed to her sisters for help. They
quickly changed her into some reeds. When Pan sighed in disappointment,
he realized that the reeds gave forth a lovely musical sound. If he cut
the reeds in unequal lengths and bound them together, it became a
wonderful musical instrument.
In creating this collage, I purposely used handmade
paper that incorporated grasses and leaves in the pulp. The sheets of
thin paper were then rolled and formed into pipes of varying lengths. I
used artistic and naturalistic elements to embellish the bindings.
These were characteristic of what could be found on the forest’s floor,
as well as natural stones and hand formed clay beads. The fibers were
made from sheep or goat (mohair) to also tie the artwork into the story
behind the myth.
This composition is matted and placed in a gold shadowbox frame measuring 16” by 20”. |

Cosmic Orb
This composition incorporates several layers of different inks and
water based mediums to give an illusion of depth and inner dimension.
The manipulation of layers is repeated until the desired
multi-dimensional affect is achieved.
I placed a rectangular panel on the oval mat
incorporating the same painted paper. This piece is placed within a
gold metallic frame measuring 11” by 14”. |
|
Copper Patina Greek Column
Handmade pulp was specially blended and cast into the form of a Greek
capital. After drying for several days, it was sealed to ensure
strength and durability. Several layers of acrylic, metallic, and
powdered paints were added. I then proceeded with patina treatments
using metallic oxides and chemicals until the desired effect of aged
antiquity was achieved. The composition was then placed on alternating
layers of metallic copper papers and black handmade paper.
The black shadowbox frame measures 16” by 16”. |
|
Burnt Offerings
This piece of artwork was developed by combining three different forms
of hand processed paper pulp. After sealing to add strength and
durability, it was layered with acrylic, powdered, and metallic paints.
Inks were also applied to give it an authentic burnt appearance. It was
then elevated and placed on a decorative handmade paper.
The mat is gold foil and measures 16” by 20”. |
